Early Lead Holds up for NWCC in Win over Lady Warriors

Powered by a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Vitor Gomes, the East Central Community College Warriors won their first soccer match of the young season 3-2 over the home-standing Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers. The East Central women fell short in their bid for a win in a 4-2 loss to the Lady Rangers.

The MACJC North Division matches were played Wednesday, Sept. 5, on the Northwest campus in Senatobia.

Gomes from Fortaleza, Brazil, picked up his third goal of the season late in the first half to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by freshman defender Martin Morfin out of Ripley.

Gomes scored again in the opening minutes of the second half, this time on a penalty kick. Sophomore midfielder Dillon Green out of Warren Central in Vicksburg added a goal a few minutes later to put the Warriors up 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Francisco Romero of Ripley assisted on Green's goal. Northwest scored two late goals to make the final 3-2.

With the win, the Warriors are now 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in North Division play. Northwest is 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the division.

The Lady Warriors fell behind early to the Northwest Lady Rangers and could not catch up.

Northwest got two goals within the first five minutes of the match to go up 2-0. East Central quickly pulled to within one on a goal from freshman midfielder Ali Grace Walker, who prepped at Newton County, less than six minutes into the first half to make the score 2-1. The Lady Rangers added two more first-half goals to take a 4-1 lead at intermission.

The Lady Warriors only other goal came in the second half off the foot of freshman forward Macey Spencer of Florence, with an assist by freshman defender Hayden Sullivan, also out of Florence High School.

The Lady Warriors fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in MACJC North Division play. The Lady Rangers improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.

The ECCC Warriors and Lady Warriors are back home on Friday, Sept. 7, to take on division foe Holmes Community College. The women will play at 3 p.m., followed by the men at 5 p.m. The East Central teams will remain at home on Friday, Sept. 14, to face Hinds Community College. Those MACJC North Division matches begin at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
