DECATUR, Miss. — East Central Community College held off Meridian Community College down the stretch to secure a 72-71 win Wednesday night at Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium.
The Warriors overcame shooting struggles from the field by controlling the glass and capitalizing at the free-throw line. East Central outrebounded Meridian 50-39 and went 24-of-35 at the stripe, including several key makes in the final minutes to preserve the narrow margin.
Javin Cooper led East Central with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Marouf Moumine added 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds off the bench. Chris Moliere chipped in eight points and five rebounds, and Jaylen Torgusson contributed nine points and five boards.
Meridian shot 46.3 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc, led by Fred Motley's game-high 24 points. The Eagles built a 32-29 halftime lead and extended it early in the second half before East Central answered with steady defensive pressure.
Despite committing 19 turnovers, the Warriors limited Meridian's free-throw opportunities and forced several late stops. Meridian had a chance to regain the lead in the closing seconds, but East Central's defense held firm.
The win gives the Warriors momentum as conference play continues.
